Plot Analysis

 

Initial Situation: Eilis moves to America to find work and build a better life for herself. Father Flood sponsors her trip to Brooklyn.

 

Conflict: When Eilis arrives in Brooklyn, she gets terribly homesick. She eventually overcomes this by keeping herself busy and attending night classes at Brooklyn College to become an accountant.

 

Complication: She falls in love with an Italian man named Tony. They go on dates every weekend and lead a life of innocent romance. 

Then one day Eilis’s sister dies and Eilis must plan a trip back to Ireland to visit her mother. She does not want to leave her man Tony. They make love for the first time.

 

Climax: Tony and Eilis have a secret legal wedding ceremony and tell no one. Eilis leaves on her trip to visit Ireland. ❤

 

Suspense: Eilis falls for a guy named Jim while she’s visiting Enniscorthy. She shares a romance with him and fears she may be falling out of love with Tony. 😦 

 

Denouement: Eilis finds out that her old boss in Enniscorthy has heard word from a relative in Brooklyn that Eilis is married. Eilis has been caught red-handed. She knows she must go back to her husband Tony because with him in Brooklyn is where she belongs.

 

Conclusion: There is no clear, concise conclusion. The story ends with Eilis travelling back with Brooklyn to be with Tony. She leaves a note for Jim Farrell explaining that she must leave. She knows that she will wonder forever what would’ve happened with Jim, but she knows that Brooklyn is where she is meant to be. She is married and knows that America will promise her the best future.
